Southern Innovator Magazine Issue 4 moladi - Great Housing Solutions and Building Technologies   Housing Solution for World’s Growing Urban Population In South Africa, one company believes that it has the right technology for an age of rapid urban population growth and the need for quick and safe housing construction. Great Housing Solutions and Building Technologies   The Moladi building system developed in 1986 by South African injection mould maker Hennie Botes consists of moulded plastic panels, looking like the panels found in children’s construction toys that are screwed together and assembled as a frame for the building. With the frame in place, a concrete mortar mix is poured in and left to dry, depending on local conditions, taking between 12 and 15 hours. (2) They also make up 91% of formalised businesses in South Africa (3) and 70% of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria. (4) SMEs not only contribute significantly to the economy but can also serve as an impetus for economic diversification through their development of new and unsaturated sectors of the economy. In addition, innovative and technology-based SMEs can provide an interesting platform for expanding outside of domestic borders, and entering intra-regional and international markets.
