As commissioner for the National Planning commission the above statement reads quite impressive but as the Chinese proverb goes: Talk does not cook rice.

National Planning Commission
"The Commission consists of respected thinkers in South Africa and is expected to bring about fresh ideas and insight into the long- term plan to advance growth and development in South Africa."

We find it totally unacceptable that, as a Commissioner, you do not have the courtesy to reply to mail sent as far back as 2012 - Ignoring our recent post on LinkedIn and Twitter. Road to WEF Africa - Pursuing Inclusive Growth in South Africa - World Economic Forum - Durban - South Africa #WEF2017

This is not what one would expect from a commissioner "expected to bring about fresh ideas and insight into the long- term plan to advance growth and development in South Africa."

Dr Miriam Altman, we would like to remind you of the great words from David McCullough Jr. during his commencement speech - "Climb the mountain so you can see the world; not so the world can see you." I am afraid Dr Altman that you fall in the latter category. It's not about you...It's what you are supposed to DO... Assist in getting the unemployed working and the hungry fed.

Your position as Commissioner is not about "self" it is what you are DOING to assist South Africans. Referring to our experience trying to engage you, you do not seem to be concerned to implement solutions, perpetuating the unemployment problem we are facing in South Africa.

Heard you say a few things what must be done - "Hold government accountable" was one. As a commissioner, you need to be held accountable for not doing what you have been tasked to do (...expected to bring about fresh ideas and insight into the long-term plan to advance growth and development in South Africa.) You do not do as you say ..."You are what you do, not what you say you'll do." - Carl Gustav Jung

“Talkers are no good doers; be assured, we at moladi come to use our hands and not our tongues.” As William Shakespeare wrote - "Talkers are no good doers.”

moladi Formwork - Miriam, "How to get South Africa Working" - What if we told you the solution to the 25% national unemployment statistic (36% youth unemployment) and the million-plus housing backlog was already in our back yard? And what if we told you jobless, unskilled South Africans could become entrepreneurs in the house building sector and be able to build homes in their communities at a fraction of the cost and in less than a week? http://hometimes.co.za/2016/03/how-to-build-a-community-in-a-month/ #NDP #NPC

Dr Miriam Altman | National Planning Commission

The National Planning Commission was established in May 2010 to develop a long term vision and strategic plan for South Africa.

The main objective of the Commission is to rally the nation around a common set of objectives and priorities to drive development over the longer term. The Commission advises government on cross- cutting issues that influence the long term development of South Africa.

The NPC comprises of 24 part-time external commissioners, a chair person and a deputy chairperson appointed by the President on the basis of their specialist skills and expertise. The commissioners were drawn from nominations made by the public throughout South Africa and are largely from outside government. The mandate of the Commission is to take a broad, independent and critical view of South Africa, by consulting with and drawing on the skills and expertise of multiple stakeholders, to build consensus and find concrete solutions to key challenges faced within the country.

NPC Commissioners

The Commission consists of respected thinkers in South Africa and is expected to bring about fresh ideas and insight into the long-term plan to advance growth and development in South Africa. The Commissioners collectively have expertise and practical experience in areas such as finance, business, politics, labour, economics, sociology, technology, science, demographics and development. The commissioners are critical advisors to government providing recommendations in the interest of the long- term development of the country. They are the voice of the future representing the long- term aspirations of South Africans.

For purposes of research, the commission established its own expert panels in their area of expertise from both inside and outside government. The expert panels provided advice on issues such as water security, food security, and economic development, social security, education, climate change, social cohesion, spatial issues, health and human resource development.

Within the NPC secretariat a board of sector experts still exists today, beyond the development of the NDP. There is an expert positioned in the department for each sector identified in the NDP, who will take forward research initiatives of the NPC to advise government on future planning and implementation as related to the proposals of the NDP. These experts form an extended branch of the commission and are responsible for ensuring the development of consistent and integrated policies and programmes aligned to the NDP across multiple layers of policy- making, planning and implementation.

The Commission is chaired by the Minister in the Presidency, Mr Jeff Radebe who will feed the work of the commission into Cabinet and government.
