Kenya government housing backlog needs solution Kenyan government to construct 300,000 housing units for staff  Kenya housing backlog The government of Kenya through the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development is planning to put up 300, 000 houses for civil servants by 2017. The social housing project will see the country alleviate housing needs by civil servants, some of which – like the police – have been reported to live in deplorable conditions. The government will start construction of 10, 000 units this year according to the director of housing in the ministry, Mr. Patrick Bucha. In addition to benefiting the civil servants, the project will also help non-governmental workers and the rest of the public, since the government will open up spaces for commercial purposes for the same. Namibia Massive Low Cost Housing Scheme The envisaged multi-billion dollar public housing programme that will see the construction of around nine thousand houses in the next three years will have no impact on FNB Namibia's revenue, CEO Ian Leyenaar has said. The housing development programme, understood to be a public private partnership between the government and institutional investors, including the country's biggest pension fund, GIPF, will see the servicing of municipal land, and the construction of low-cost housing in the country's informal settlements. About N$1.9 billion has already been allocated to the Ministry of Regional, Local Government, Housing and Rural Development for the 2013/14 financial year to cater for, among others, the servicing of land and improved sanitary standards in urban, peri-urban and rural areas while N$5.8 billion in total will be allocated over the Medium Term Expenditure Framework. Namibia-Housing Crisis Confirmed    Namibia-Housing Crisis  President Hifikepunye Pohamba yesterday lamented the critical housing situation that has made housing a luxury for many Namibians. "It is a source of great concern that 16 percent of the population live in shacks or improvised housing units. This situation must be addressed and addressed speedily," Pohamba said yesterday during the launch of the 2011 Population and Housing Census Basic Report that indicates about 336 000 Namibians have been condemned to live in corrugated iron-sheet shack dwellings. While the preliminary results of this latest census were already released last year, yesterday's launch contained a much more detailed depiction of the demographic and socio-economic status of the country.
