Perhaps one of the limitations of the affordable housing debate is that it focuses primarily on the price of housing rather than the production of housing.

If housing remains a commodity delivered through conventional procurement systems, affordability will always be constrained by the same forces of land valuation, speculation, capital concentration, and limited productive capacity.

What if the conversation shifted from affordable housing to productive housing?

Housing demand represents one of the largest untapped economic opportunities in the world. Every house requires labour, skills, materials, manufacturing, logistics, and enterprise. The question is whether communities participate in that production or simply consume the final product.

At moladi, we have found that housing can become a platform for skills development, cooperative formation, enterprise creation, and local economic growth. Communities move from beneficiaries to producers.
